Day fifty 3/2/2010

So it has been one week since my last post and I have not taken any additional pictures so this post will be rather short. Just some highlights of the last week.

Thursday night we went out to hot pot. For those who don't know this is when there is a boiling soup in the center of the table and you toss meats and veggies in to cook them. Apparently generally this is very good, but the Chinese guy who ordered got all this nasty crap and bone ridden meat, not the normal choice apparently. So there was lamb stomach and pork on the bone which was annoying. Luckily at the end Bill ordered some boneless meat so we managed to eat something decent. A key note about where we ate though was that they served dog. It was hanging in the display window, white skin, tail, paws. And while you may here it's illegal in China now that's all BS. This place had a huge banner around the entrance to show what it served mainly, about 10 pictures of live lambs and 10 of live dogs. I was told there are about five places in our town that serve dog, it's pretty normal.

Me and Austin went and played pool after dinner and the rest of the crew went for a foot massage. We at spicy fried noodles later that night after a bunch of beers and the next morning I didn't go to work until 11am from my stomach rejecting that junk, I have to cut it out.

Stayed in Friday night in preparation for Saturday in Hong Kong. Went to HK Saturday around noon and got in at about 3pm. We grabbed dinner with Danielle before heading out to LKF for some drinking. We met up with our friends from the Peak Tram and spent most of the night wandering LKF haunts boozing on both bar beers and those bought at our favorite budget dispensary, 711. At around 3am we headed back to our hostel and slept until about 2pm the next day.

We grabbed lunch at Inside Out again as we both wanted pizza, lack of cheese gets to you and it's the best pizza in the area near our hostel. After that Sam got a hair cut while I scored some more Starbucks for the french press.

We came in this weekend specifically to go to a Northeastern function on Sunday night so at 6pm we headed there. It was at a upscale hotel on the harbor and we ended up giving a brief speech about Northeastern to prospective students. We talked for a while with both alumni and prospective students before the hall cleared out. At this point Melissa, who had also come as an Alumni, and some of the other Alumni and current students on coop joined up and headed to LKF for a few beers and to see the replay of the bronze metal Olympic hockey match. It was a good time and we exchanged some numbers and plan to meet up again with most of the people involved.

We woke up early the next day and headed to the van to the factory. Somewhat exhausted from a lack of sleep, don't know why but I couldn't sleep Sunday night, I was somewhat lethargic all day. At lunch we noted Austin wasn't there, but chalked it up to sleeping in and didn't think much of it. When dinner rolled around and he was still MIA things got interesting.

A full discussion took place figuring out the time line of his last spotting. Friday after work. He had missed meeting up with Mike on Saturday as he had planned to, and Friday night I had noted him acting oddly as he refused to go out to dinner with some vigor that I commented to Sam on. A search of his room turned up his cellphone and room key, explaining why he wasn't answering his phone. We turned his phone on and saw last call answered was after work Friday. The mystery was becoming more clear. We talked with security that said he left the back gate at 6pm Friday, shortly after telling Sam and me he wasn't feeling going out. Adding up everything it was obvious. He had been living here under the assumption he couldn't leave the country until his motorbike incident was cleared up. But after a smooth trip to Hong Kong to fulfill the visa requirements of leaving once every 60 days he had discovered he wasn't a marked man so to speak. Currently nothing is decisive, but from what I and can deduce he bought a plane ticket from either Hong Kong or Guangzhou and booked it back to the homeland. Not very fair to the company, but and epic story with some balls none the less.

It's Tuesday now and I am at work, I will try to be more timely this week about keeping detailed entries with some photos. But it is a bit of a hassle to keep up on so sorry if I don't come through.
